We are all familiar with chemical addictions to intoxicating substances such as alcohol or cocaine. Sex, work and internet use are also frequently mentioned as aspects of life that can be used addictively. The least recognized addiction in our society, however, may be the addiction to television - especially drama series(from Korea, Japan or Taiwan).
Many of us may even be unaware that we are already addicted to watching television. Let's evaluate on the definition of "addiction" before I move on. It is said that addiction is characterized by spending an unusually large amount of time using a substance that is addictive; finding oneself using it more often than intended; thinking about reducing the use, and are making repeated unsuccessful attempts to reduce it; giving up social activities to use the substance, and reporting withdrawal symptoms when one does achieve stopping the use.
I used to be a drama addict. After leaving my previous company, I managed to keep myself away from renting or buying anymore DVDs. However a few weeks back, a colleague pushed a few drama series into my hands as she had finished watching all of them (a total of five). Guess what, that moment I didn't recall the bible telling us to flee from temptation. I brought all of them back home.
They laid in my tv console for a few weeks, I was not motivated to watch them at all until last week, I came home early one day and...
I couldn't stop watching till 4am in the morning. By then it was 8 hours of watching. Early morning I woke up for church sleepily. Guess I was convicted. From the moment I opened my eyes, I knew I had to return the DVDs asap.
I am writing today as a reminder to myself and you, my dearest friends. Anything that draws us away from God, stay away from it. It is better to spend time with God than to spend time watching a series of programmes that does not face up to reality and does not benefit us. Though I'm a media student, pop culture is not excluded from my "abstain" list.
Below are some helpful tips taken from "All about life challenges", if you're SERIOUSLY addicted.
Television Addiction - How to Avoid It Is there hope from becoming struck with television addiction? Yes, start here.
- Keep a record of how much TV you watch and when you watch. Do this for one week.
- List all the other fun activities you can do at home instead of watching TV. Place your list on your refrigerator so you can check this list BEFORE you turn on the TV. Consider fun things to do as a family, household projects you’d like to complete, outside activities, reading, exercise, etc.
- Set a limit for how much TV you will watch in one week. Record your time and stick to your commitment.
- Commit to exercising whenever you watch TV, such as walking on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, etc.
- Consider removing your TV for a set period of time. You might find yourself talking to your family again instead of watching the TV so much
So much for now. May you find joy and peace when you spend time with God. =) Jesus is my friend and yours too!
