Monday, June 23, 2008 "I've been through..."?
4:51 PM
Have you ever heard people saying "I've been through..."? Or perhaps this may sound more familiar, "I have eaten more salt than you ate rice" (Chinese proverb)?
It is really good to hear from the experienced and the expert. Indeed there are plenty to learn from them. They are a good source of inspiration and they are often the right people to approach if you need some wise advice on something that you have never set sail on.
But I've also discovered a 'BEWARE' sign in front of those "old" advices. There tend to be smells of biasness and individuated opinions. They may not be bad but it is wise to QC the things you receive. Please don't get me wrong, I am not saying that you should doubt every pieces of advices you receive but it is important to ask God for wisdom so that you may have all understanding in the things you hear and not be easily influenced or swayed by the thoughts and comments of others. After all, what is applicable to them may not be applicable to us and vice versa.
Let's give it some thought: Do we often impose our past experiences into the present situation of the advice-seeker? Do we often based our judgments on what WE have gone through? Do we often assume the same things happened to us will DEFINITELY happen to another in the same way? Do we often neglect the biblical perspective? Do we often wear a 'BIG HAT' when sharing our testimonies? Do we often think we have the best advice? Do we often forget to LISTEN and understand the problem before we start sharing our opinions?
Have we forgotten NONE of us is made the same?
No one will EVER walk through the same path - it is the unique process of life.
"I've been through..." - is your journey; it will never lessen another person's burden.
It took me a while to understand this simple fact.
So let us not strive to become the "perfect" problem-solver (let's leave that to Jesus), but to be an encourager to one another. I believe words of encouragement will never be too much for anyone.

2:34 PM
I have DECIDED! Not going to continue to blog on the 4th and 5th day of HCMC.
Reasons:
1) Takes up too much blog space.
2) It's way overdue
3) Takes up too much time
4) and ABOVE ALL... one of my fellow backpacker "MJ" commented on my lack of creativity & effort in presenting the pics. HA. (Hey, though I didn't design the scrapbook but it takes a lot of TIME to organise and do up this whole thing hor... Heartless MJ!)
Ha.. anyway, I'm too lazy to do it also. Nuanyi's blog has presented a good part of the journey already. Hm. Maybe I'll get some photoslide tools to present rest of the photos to conclude my whole V-trip. Will update more on my Malacca trip soon. =)

10:25 PM
There are so many thoughts. I've to blog it before I continue with the 4th & 5th day of HCMC.
I was on my way home this evening and on the LRT I overheard this:
A little boy & mum board the train from the same station as me. After entering the train, the little boy (about 5 years old) requested to sit down but the mum decided no.
Little boy: I want to sit.. I want to sit.. I want... (& it continues)
His Mum: I said no. You stop it.
The little boy insist.
His Mum: You better stop. You want me to slap you is it?
Little boy became silent.
His Mum: So irritating. Just like your cousin.
The little boy teared. (Note: He was crying SILENTLY.)
As I look at the little boy, my heart wept with him. (I felt like explaining to his mum the aftermath-effect but such thought did not work out for me in that crowded LRT.) If he was crying out loud like any child who throw his tantrum would, I might feel better. But the little boy was quiet.. I couldn't lift my sight from him. I noticed each time the tears flow down his cheeks, he would use his hand to wipe it away.. He tried to control the tears but it just kept coming out..
I'm trying hard to put what I felt earlier into words right now. I think he was deeply hurt by his mum's remarks. To me.. young children are really precious & innocent. They are meant to be love & nurture. In fact I think it is the best time to instill values into them while they're still at their tender years - while they are still incorrupted & pure. Sometimes, we as adults used our assumptions on the little ones without even realising the fact that the child is still in the process of developing their cognitive mind. They could hardly find reason for the things they do or did wrongly. Patience is the key to teaching them.
I was taken aback by the insensitivity of his mum choice of words, though it could be just an expression of her anger, she definitely did it the wrong way. This incident (might seem like a minor one) could become a hindrance in the little boy's life. There are many adults today who are unable to live the way they want to because of their childhood nightmares. They are unable to walk out of condemnation and unforgiveness. They are bounded by the chains from their past and forever living a unfulfilled life. They carried these baggages everywhere they go.. into marriage.. and when they have their own children, they do not know the right way to love & teach their children.. So the cycle goes on. Until unless the chains are broken and cast out from their lives just as the Bible says "...the old has gone, the new has come" (2 Cor 5:17), the road will only become rougher to walk.
I pray that the little boy would be relieve from all hurts and condemnations... & I pray for the mum to have wisdom and revelations in coping with the family.
It is true that there are some things we cannot choose; for examples like who our parents are.. where we are born in.. how we look like.. our culture.. our background.. etc. You may be blessed with a great family or you may be an orphan; if we would understand the fact that God is the Creator and He is our Provider and He will never forsake us then nothing else matters anymore. Isn't it?
God did not create illnesses (share about this some other time) but He would not allow a blind man to be blind or a lame to be lame if He is not planning to fill that insufficiency with greater works. So do not fear circumstances but learn to embrace the providential will of God and He will lead you through the deep & dark valleys of life.

DAY THREE was one of the most awesome time of the entire trip.

We checked out of hotel early in the morning to catch a tour bus to our next destination: Mui Ne Beach. It was supposed to be a four hours (max.) ride but we took off at 8am plus and reached the beach hotel at about 2pm. Well.. never expect a backpackers journey to be always timely. Bus do broke down at times. Ha.
We had a great time swimming and relaxing at the resort. Can you imagine how luxurious it was that we were the only one of the two groups of tourist staying at the hotel? Tell you what. They switched on the jacuzzi just for us and made breakfast just for US! It was like having the whole beach to ourselves. Yea.
It was not long before the night arrives. We had our dinner at a home-cum-restaurant across our hotel. And again, we were the only guests. So honored. The meal was delicious... we had some homely dishes and crabs to go along. It was a lovely day. To make it better, we had an DIY facial refresher mask session... Good night, Mui Ne.

What's on our DAY TWO's itinery?

It was a beautiful morning. Arise and shine. We all rose up early for our trip to Cu Chi Tunnel. The hotel receptionists were kind enough to help us book a mini-bus to our destination. Vietnamese - KIND. =)
The mid-stop was at an art place. It was an amazing sight to see the process behind each artwork, the people were extremely careful and detailed in painting, moulding, and some of them were sticking little pieces of egg shells into a beautiful art piece... So fascinating! Appreciate artist!
Finally after two hours? We reached Cu Chi Tunnel. Our tunnel guide has some kind of humor. Ha. Anyway, the entire Cu Chi Tunnel journey affirms my beliefs that Vietnamese indeed have some hidden qualities. Besides being nice and kind, they are extremely SMART! Who else would come out with such an intelligent strategy.. build that unimaginable tunnel and live in there?! I cannot describe. You got to go there and try it out yourself. FYI: they have already expand the tunnel for tourist-convenience but I tell you it is NOT EASY even just going through a 5 metres stretch.
Well, after that long and fuzzy trip. We were back at our hotel area for some shopping and eating..

After our arrival at HCMC, the first mission was to find our rest place. Thank God for nice people. A very helpful cabby lady took out a whole lot of hotel brochures and volunteered to call up the hotels to check for availability for us while she was driving! =) Ha. And finally, after some choosy picky decision, four of us decided on a hotel near Ben Thanh Market; very convenient place. We took a big room with 1 king sized and 1 queen sized bed to stay for the first two nights. Settled with that... we were on our way for some makan.. so here comes DAY ONE Part II.

We started looking for the traditonal noodles Ah Nuan heard about called "Pho" (pronounce as 'fa[2]'). It looks plain and not appealing but it was tasty! MUST TRY. The rest of the day we spent exploring the districts and time seems to pass very slowly...
We went to a little cafe (again it was a very unattractive cafe by the corner of the road) and MJ had his first try of V's coffee and man it was unforgettable!
Evening arrived.. we were hungry again. We stopped by this beautiful Italian Restaurant and ended the day with a sumptuous Italian dinner. Cheers, Saigon.
